Since the dawn of time, society has made it seem as if cats and dogs simply can’t get along. Then there’s the whole “dogs rule and cats drool” debate, too. But the truth is, there are many dog breeds that like cats. While any dog of any breed can become friends with a cat, there are certain breeds of dogs that naturally gravitate toward the feline kind. Chihuahua
This one might not come as too much of a surprise seeing as the average Chihuahua is smaller than the average feline! Chihuahuas are known for their clingy yet playful nature, and due to their pint pup size, most cats don’t view them as much of a threat. I have a Chihuahua that gets along great with all three of my cats, who range in different ages, sizes, and temperaments.
For an overly energetic Chihuahua, they might come across a kitty that’s quick to put them in their place when they get in their face. But once healthy boundaries have been established, they can become the very best life long friends—trust me on this!
Golden Retriever
I think just about anyone and everyone knows that Golden Retrievers are totally chill dogs that get along with just about anyone—including cats. As puppies, their gregarious and playful nature might slightly annoy a moody cat, but a mature Golden Retriever could be the very best of friends with the right feline. Goldens are great with kids, other dogs, and come in on many lists for dog breeds that like cats.
Despite this breed’s larger size, a Golden Retriever is a big softie with a heart of gold. These “nanny” type dogs love to be with their pets and their people as much as possible, and this includes their feline family, too! At the end of the day, the Golden is simply a gentle giant of a dog that was born to love and be loved in return.
Pug
Who doesn’t love a wrinkly pug? (That was a rhetorical question!) All jokes aside, the Pug is known for their affinity towards cats. And, it seems, there is concrete evidence which tells us that some dogs have a major thing against Pugs. Pugs are usually mellow dogs that thrive in homes with families, and their relaxed demeanor is an ideal match for a chilled out kitty cat.
Anyone who owns a Pug can tell you that these dogs love to sleep—and anyone who knows a thing or two about cats knows they’re all about extended sleeptime, too. Because of this, a Pug is a purrfect match for a home with cats!
Beagle
This popular hunting dog breed is hardwired to hunt in packs—so they’re quick to consider a cat in the home as an honorary member of their pack. The Beagle is revered for their gregarious nature, so they have a tendency to get along well with people and pets in the home.
While playful, the Beagle is known for being loving and loyal to those they care about. And this especially includes cats! Owners of Beagles and felines often report their four-legged friends cozying up for long naps together.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
This smaller breed of dog is known for their timid and loving nature. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a great choice for homes with cats because these are not the type of dogs who will be pushy or all up in a cat’s face. They are more reserved, and are fine with catering to a cat’s demands for their personal space to be respected.
These companion dogs love to be with their family at all times—and this includes four-legged family, too. This low-maintenance breed can appear shy and sensitive, but a home with cats is a perfect match for them due to mutual understanding and respect. A young child or a rowdy dog might intimidate this fragile breed, but a cat will know and understand them, and can easily become a lifelong companion for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

But it’s important to consider some breed’s traits that are ingrained into their DNA. For example, a herding dog like a Border Collie, is instinctually wired to herd…which would equal chasing in the mind of a cat.
