Every year, the American Kennel Club digs deep into breed registrations to determine the top dog breeds in terms of popularity. There were 1.4 million puppies registered to the AKC last year alone, and those purebred pups are what make up this year’s list of most popular dog breeds. All 193 recognized breeds are ranked from most to least popular, and it’s no surprise what breed tops them all.
For the 29th year in a row, the Labrador Retriever is ranked as the most popular dog breed in the country. AKC vice president of public relations and communications, Brandi Hunter, told CNN,
“Labs are an all-around dog. It really doesn’t matter what kind of lifestyle you have. They’re great for families that have kids but also if you have a really active lifestyle and like to hike…They have a lot of functions even outside the home, so I think that’s the reason why they stay pretty popular.”
While there are no signs that Labs are going to give up their top spot any time soon, the top 10 did see some major changes since last year. For the first time in history, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi slid into the number 10 spot.
Ranked at a respectable number 13 in the 2018 list, the Corgi jumped three spots this year. Their sudden surge in popularity could be due to their increased presence in both social media and television. The popular Netflix original series ‘The Crown’ features more than a few cute Corgis. And the Corgi’s stubby little legs, big ears, bright smile, and fluffy butt has inspired more than a few Internet memes.
The Corgi coming into number 10 pushed the Yorkshire Terrier down into the 12 spot. And the Poodle and Beagle continue to battle it out between 6 and 7.
At the other end of the list, the English Foxhound is ranked as the least popular and is down from number 188 last year. Norwegian Lundehunds and Sloughis, also round out the bottom of the list.
